Biography
1953
Hal's Aunt Marian gave him his first camera. His first photo was at twilight of a lineman working at the top of a pole. After the flash, he heard words that he had never heard before ... but too often since.
High School and College Years
Influenced by Kurt Vonnegut, Frederic Brown, Anthony Boucher, Richard Matheson, Alfred Hitchcock, and Robert Sheckley.
Attained degrees in business administration and mathematics as well as a secondary teaching certificate.
Became proficient with a Canon SLR.
1971 - 1974
Started using a Leica rangefinder.
Photographer for Austin School in Austin, Nevada on the “Loneliest Highway in America” while being the math department and half the science, history, and english departments.
1976
Saw real Vermeers at the Mauritshuis and Rijksmuseum ... and was changed.
Built a Vector Graphics microcomputer and attended Homebrew Computer Club meetings at the Stanford Linear Accelerator auditorium with the likes of Lee Felsenstein, Gordon French, Steve Wozniak, and Steve Jobs.
1977
Joined the R&D team at Cromemco Microcomputers. Wrote technical manuals and rewrote their BASIC database management system.
1979 - 1999
Silicon Valley senior programmer analyst, senior systems administrator, operating system and database internals expert.
1999
Moved to Fieldbrook as a telecommuter working for Hewlett-Packard. We built a craftsman-style house using redwood on the property for the framing of the house. At that time, my wife had borrowed a digital camera from work. I used it to document the construction of our house. I soon bought a Nikon digital camera. I was hooked. Darkroom work is also much safer using a computer instead of toxic chemicals.
Started using a Nikon digital camera.
2003

Started company Lucid Works specializing in giclée prints and greeting cards.
2004
Joined the Ink People and the Redwood Art Association.
Took first place in professional digital photography category at Humboldt County Fair.
First outdoor booth at the Fieldbrook Art & Wine Festival.
2005
A Lucid Works print was selected for the Redwood Art Association spring juried show at the Morris Graves Museum in Eureka
After using a digital camera for six years, went back to using a film camera.
2006
Joined the Old Town Art Gallery in Eureka.
